If you visit India you will probably spend some time in Delhi, it is probably where your plane will land. There is a lot to see and do in Delhi so you will want to make sure that you schedule time to see the city. As the nation's capital as well as one of its oldest cities there are lots of landmarks that are well worth the time for a visit.

Delhi is the capital of India and the officially the countries second largest city, although the capital region is actually the largest metropolitan area. The city has a rich and very long history with the area believed to have been inhabited for more than four thousand years. Over the years the city became important because of its location on the trade routes that were used for many centuries. As a result of this there is a great deal of history to be seen in Delhi.

Delhi is located in northern India and it is located on Gangetic plains. This gives it a mostly tropical climate with long hot summers and winters that are only slightly less warm, although temperatures do occasionally dip down close to freezing during the winter. There is also a monsoon season which not only brings a lot of rain but also dramatically increases the humidity.

There is a lot to see in Delhi so it is definitely a place that you are going to want to spend some time during your visit. Most of the attractions are historical in nature like the famous Red Fort. The Lotus Temple and India Gate are other major landmarks. The architecture of the city is definitely one of the highlights with so many different styles all mixed together.

One thing that you need to be aware of if you are visiting Delhi is that it is a physically very large city as it has really spread out in a haphazard way over a very large area. This can make getting around a challenge. This is made worse by the fact that traffic is a nightmare, this is no surprise in a city of twenty two million. The city has a large fleet of modern buses and a metro rail system, they are quite good for getting around the city although they are very crowded. Most tourists find that an auto rickshaw is the best way of getting around the city.

Delhi used to be one of the most polluted cities in the world but over the last twenty years they have worked hard to change this. They have been quite successful through initiatives like changing the buses to run on natural gas. That being said pollution is still a problem, they may not be in the top ten most polluted cities in any more but there is still a long way to go before they can really say that they have cleaned up the problem.
