Travelling in India can be a great adventure but it can also be a challenge in a lot of ways. This is not to say that India is a particularly difficult country to get around in, just that it is probably different than what you are used to. The main difference will be the sheer number of people. However with a little bit of advance planning you should find that your trip goes off without any problems.
The first thing that you are going to have to do if you are planning to visit India is to make sure that you get all of your visas taken care of in advance. In theory visitors from some countries can get their visas when they arrive at the airport but it will be far easier if you do this ahead of time. It can take a while to get this taken care of so you are going to want to start well in advance.
It is important to remember that India is a tropical country. Therefore you are going to have to get some shots before you visit. Your doctor will be able to advise you on which ones you are going to need. It is also a good idea to check travel advisories before you head out. Although India is generally a safe country there are areas where unrest could be a problem.
You can fly to India from almost all major countries these days so you should have no trouble finding a flight. The biggest decision that you will have to make is which city you are going to fly to. There are several cities in India with large international airports so you have a choice on where you fly to. This will depend in large part on which part of the country you are planning to visit.
When you do get to India you are going to want to give yourself a couple of days to acclimatize. This doesn't mean that you can't do anything just that you want to take it easy. You are going to have to deal with things like jetlag and getting used to the food which is quite a bit different than you would get at home. A few days of taking it easy will help in this regard.
Arranging accommodation in India is a fairly easy matter since there is a lot of it available. You can book it ahead of time if you want to but most travelers prefer to make their arrangements as they go. This gives them the ability to change their schedule whenever they want to. If you are going to do this just be aware that in some of the areas off of the main tourist trails finding accommodation can be a problem. Also there are quite a few festivals in the country and when these are going on rooms can be in short supply.
