Any trip to India will almost certainly include a stop in Mumbai. It is the largest city in the country and both the financial and cultural capital of the country. It is also one of the most historic cities in India which means that there are a number of attractions for the tourist to see in Mumbai.
Mumbai is the most populous city and the economic center of the country. It is the home to most of the country's largest companies as well as the largest port. It is also the cultural center of the country as well as being one of the oldest cities. As a result it is the best known Indian city internationally.
The area where the city itself is located is believed to have been inhabited for thousands of years and has been a main center of commerce for many empires. However the city really started to grow in the sixteenth century when it was ceded to Portugal. The Portuguese used the city as a trading port that allowed them access to Indian spices. Eventually during the seventeenth century Portugal would hand the city over to the British who made it an important part of its empire in India.
The city of Mumbai was initially formed on a group of seven islands on the west coast of the country. Over the years it has expanded dramatically as the population has now grown to more than twenty million forcing the city to take over space on the mainland. In addition while the British were in possession they instituted a number of civil engineering projects that completely changed the shape of the Islands.
Mumbai has a climate that is tropical so the weather really doesn't change much in terms of temperature from summer to winter. In reality there is a wet season and a dry season rather than a summer or winter. It is hot year round and although slightly cooler during the winter it is also more humid. During the summer the city is subject to frequent Monsoons.
Getting around Mumbai like most large Indian cities can be a challenge due to the huge amount of traffic congestion. This is made worse by the fact that the city is made up of islands that can only be accessed by bridges. The good news however is that the city has the best public transit in India. This still makes getting around a challenge but not as bad as it used to be.
There are a great many tourist attractions to be seen in Mumbai and therefore it is one of the most visited cities in India. This is largely due to the long and unique history that the city has. In addition as the cultural and financial capital of India the Mumbai hosts a number of festivals and events that attract people to the city.
